Beautiful Bavarian Alps

The German Alps Road runs along the border of Austria and Germany with some of the most breathtaking scenery. Along with the still snow capped mountains and craggy peaks, there are fast flowing pale blue rivers and clear pristine water.
We stayed at the southern Bavarian ski resort of Reit Im Winkl in the heart of the Chiemgau Alps, not too far from Konigsee, a popular alpine lake.
Our accommodation at the Villa Mittermaier in Reit Im Winkl; our room is on the top floor with a verandah.
Surrounding houses and gasthofs (guesthouse) in the characteristic German Bavarian style with flower boxes, window shutters, wide overhanging eaves and painted decorations or images on the white walls.

We drove along the German Alpine Road to Lake Konigsee passing beautiful scenes of villages and alpine mountains

Our expectation of Lake Konigsee was one of quietness with picturesque scenery surrounded by an alpine national park.
On arrival, we thought we had taken a wrong turn into a huge tourist attraction with multiple flags lining the street, a Macdonalds restaurant with a Wilkommen sign and an massive car park lined on one side with tourist stalls and multiple tour buses on the other. After parking the car and paying a 3 hour fee, we wandered past all the tourist stalls and shops, following signs that look like boats assuming it led to water.
And at the end of all the touristy paraphernalia was a beautiful lake with clear, pristine water. Electric boats take people to various places on the long glacial lake stopping at St Bartholomas church or a waterfall. There are no petrol driven boats allowed on the lake to pollute the pristine waters.

It started pouring rain when we arrived at St Bartholomas Church

On return from the boat ride, we treated ourselves to German waffles with strawberries and a hot cappaccino after our wet adventure.
