Medieval splendour at Rothenberg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a very picturesque Medieval town with an old town centre that is surrounded by a fortified wall. We arrived around midday on a Saturday, which is probably the peak time for crowds. There was also a World of Music Festival with bands from around the world performing. Today, in the town's centre, a large American band was playing which drew large crowds of tourists and the band's family members. We arrived just before the end of their performance and then the majority of the crowd converged on the famous Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas shop.

We visited the Criminal Museum with some very nasty punishments that occurred in the town over the centuries

Iron Maiden torture device - like a mummy's case but lined with spikes
Masks were worn as a form of punishment even if you were a blabber mouth

We stayed at Detwang, just outside of Rothenburg but within walking distance. The hotel, Schwarzes Lamm, was the centre of activity in the small medieval hamlet.
